Dear Families, We are pleased to inform you that through a partnership with Mainely Teeth, we are now able to offer dental services to your child. On several days throughout the school year beginning at the end of November, a Mainely Teeth hygienist will set up inside your child’s school(s) with portable dental equipment where they will provide routine dental screenings, preventive services and simple dental treatments to students who are eligible and have been signed up ahead of time. If your child has not received routine dental care in over 6 months or your child is in need of dental care due to the lack of local access, this service is for you! If you are interested in having your child receive care while at school, please contact your school nurse for the full permission packet. If you have any questions regarding upcoming dental clinics at your child’s school, please email Ayla Burke at ayla@mainelyteeth.com

Some interesting data from our friends at Attendance Matters: Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much, but absences add up! When a student misses two days a month, they will miss 20 days a year, they will miss 30 hours of math over the school year, they will miss 60 hours of reading and writing over the school year, and they will miss over one year of school by graduation. As you might imagine the data only gets worse with increased absences. When a student misses four days a month, they will miss 40 days a year, they will miss 60 hours of math over the school, they will miss 120 hours of reading and writing over the school year, and they will miss over two years of school by graduation.

Dear families, At HSES we want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others. This past week, our teachers began presenting Second Step Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children's social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following: Growth Mindset & Goal Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives. Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion-management strategies-including stress management for older students-to calm strong feelings. Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others' perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships. Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process: S: Say the problem T: Think of solutions E: Explore the outcomes P: Pick a solution You will receive weekly communications regularly from your child's teacher to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don't hesitate to contact me or your child's teacher for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community. Sincerely, Ryan R. Wilkins Principal Hartford-Sumner Elementary School

Good Evening! It was great to see so many of you today and we are looking forward to having everyone back tomorrow! Please remember tomorrow is Wednesday and we start one-hour later. Today our staff worked hard to get down the timing of new bus routes and the process of releasing students in a safe and timely manner. I thank everyone: parents, students and staff for your patience as we work out the bugs. Additionally, as you may have seen in the news Attendance Matters and we have worked hard to increase attendance last year and we want each of our schools to beat last years rate!! We can do it if we all work together. Thank you for being a part of our district, RSU 10!!

Tomorrow, September 6, is our first Late Arrival Wednesday of the school year. This means students will start school an hour later than normal and parents should look for buses roughly an hour later than normal. If you have any questions, please call the main office.

The opening day for the 2023-24 school year is Tuesday, September 5th. Just a reminder that drop off time for students is 7:30AM and school begins at 7:50AM. Some bus routes have been combined so please be patient as our drivers navigate these changes. Lastly, parents looking for supply lists can go to our school Facebook page and look for the August 7th posting, which has all of the supply lists.
