From the Athletic Director

Winter Athletic Protocols

As we enter the Winter Athletic season, Mountain Valley Middle School has adopted the following procedure, with regards to Winter Athletics offered by the MVMS. As the season progresses, we will re-evaluate these protocols if and when Oxford County’s level of transmission increases or decreases.

MVMS is part of the Capital Area League and will adhere to protocols when competing against other teams in this league.  MVMS and RSU 10’s goal is to maintain our schedule and provide every opportunity for our student athletes. This includes being able to hold every contest.

MASKING

Student-Athletes participating in extracurricular athletics are expected to mask appropriately, in accordance with CDC and Maine DOE recommendations to public schools. Currently this means masking while practicing and competing in indoor events (basketball). Masking is required inside buildings, in locker rooms, on school buses, and in public areas that are indoors. Visiting teams are expected to wear masks while inside our buildings and while competing. Visiting officials, workers, and media are also expected to wear masks.

SPECTATORS

MVMS will allow for home spectators at our school. The number of home fans will be determined by the number of athletes participating in a given sport and the capacity of the building.  At this time each athlete will receive 4 tickets per home game and athletes will be responsible for getting the tickets from the coach.  These do not have to be the same people every game, but only 4 per player will be allowed.

ALL SPECTATORS ARE EXPECTED TO BE MASKED, regardless of vaccination status, or will be asked to leave our venue. Live streaming will be in place for each event for those who choose not to adhere to our request.  We will be live streaming on the following site.  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcRYTAGTgVfXVkxayCZq09Q. The site will be posted on the MVMS Athletic Facebook page.

LOCKER ROOMS

Locker rooms will be open and available. Masking protocols are to be enforced and in place in locker room settings. Time in locker rooms will be limited to between 10 and 14 minutes and should only be used for essential changes to prepare for athletics, for general restroom use and/or pre, halftime and post-game time with teams. Locker rooms are NOT a ‘hang out’.

COVID RELATED COMMUNICATION

It is important that parents and students communicate with the MVMS staff related to concerns or known Covid situations. We ask these communications to occur directly with the respective school nurse- not necessarily the coach being the first person of contact.

RETURN TO PLAY PROTOCOL (COVID-related)

When a student-athlete is diagnosed as Covid-positive, there potentially is a period of time that the student will need to go through before returning to full activity status. These individuals will need to secure clearance from their doctor or other medical provider(s). Our athletic trainer will work with the athlete on a return plan.
