Grade 5/6

December 18, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Out of an abundance of concern for the health and safety of our students, staff and school community,  Mountain Valley Middle School started our year out in a hybrid model for all students. As we have moved through this year, we have experienced hybrid learning,  fully remote learning, and yellow designations. We appreciate your support and flexibility as we follow CDC guidelines and move among the various situations in order to keep everyone safe.  We promised at the beginning of the school year to explore if we could bring our students back to school for more in person learning time . We have come to the conclusion that the 5th and 6th grade-levels have small enough class sizes to allow us to safely follow the  precautions we have set in place and combine the cohorts to have students come to school four days a week.

That being said, we have to be aware that if we are not successful in keeping our students safe and following the required guidelines, or if the guidelines change at the state level, we must be prepared to revert back to the hybrid model, if need be.

Tentative Timeline for 4 Day In Person Learning:
The Week of January 4-8, 2021: All MVMS grades will remain in the hybrid model to allow us time to evaluate county designations and if we have any localized COVID-19 spread in our area.

Monday, January 11, 2021: All 5th grade hybrid students will begin coming to school 4 days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). Wednesday remains an at home learning day. Students must still do online attendance check ins on Wednesdays.

Tuesday, January 19, 2021: All 6th grade hybrid students will begin coming to school 4 days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). Wednesday remains an at home learning day. Students must still do online attendance check ins on Wednesdays.

If you, as parents and guardians, feel uncomfortable with the 4 day week, we do have fully remote learning as an alternate pathway. If you decide to change your child to remote learning when we bring our students back to school in January, you will be committing to your child staying remote until the end of the trimester, to give us a chance to build and strengthen our in school learning environment.  On March 15, 2021, if you choose, we will welcome your child back to in person learning.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at (207)364-7926.

Sincerely,
Ryan Casey
